The Quiet Power of Tactile Design
Let’s talk about my absolute favorite secret weapon: tactile design! I am going to touch on three ways to evoke texture in digital design, although there are many more!
After a decade of getting my hands messy with clay and pottery, and more recently diving into the colorful world of floral design, I’ve realized something magical. Even though I’m working primarily on a screen now, those hands-on experiences are the heartbeat of my digital work. In pottery, you layer glazes to create depth; in digital design, we use overlays! Think of an overlay as a digital glaze—by stacking it over an image or video and tweaking the opacity, you aren’t just editing; you’re physically building a mood. It’s all about creating that "touchable" feeling through layers, light, and color. Who knew digital pixels could feel so artisanal?
Texture is all about crafting a specific emotion. It taps directly into our senses and is such an incredible element to explore within the design landscape. While I’m still on my own journey toward mastery, it’s the one aspect of artistry that truly resonates with me. Incorporating overlays introduces a fresh sense of depth and dimension—allowing for a finish that can be either beautifully understated or bold and vibrant, perfectly tailored to a project’s unique stories.
I also simply adore playing with embossing and debossing typography! It is such a dreamy way to infuse digital letterforms with a sculpted, physical presence, making them look as if they’ve been lovingly pressed into or raised right off your screen.
By dancing with highlights and shadows, we can replicate the gorgeous way light catches a 3D surface, giving logos and headers a sense of weight that feels so high-end and intentional. It’s the perfect touch for brands that want to radiate craftsmanship, luxury, or a bit of heritage. Just like the bespoke packaging and branded treasures we craft at Vernali Design House, these tactile effects help a brand story feel truly emotive and real—beautifully bridging that gap between the digital and physical worlds.
Finally, let’s talk about patterns! While they have a tendency to feel a bit "extra," when used too much–they are absolutely stunning when integrated with a tasteful, skilled touch. Patterns add a rhythmic quality to a layout, functioning much like the repetitive stems in a floral arrangement or the rhythmic scoring on a piece of clay. Whether it is a subtle grain that mimics handmade paper or a complex geometric repetition, patterns provide a visual anchor that makes a digital space feel inhabited and intentional rather than empty. At Vernali Design House, we believe these details are what transform a standard interface into a memorable brand experience.
